Elena Figurina was born in Latvia in 1955. Fourteen years later the family moved to Leningrad, where Helen graduated from the School of Music in guitar and then a few years of her teaching. Future artist as an engineer, graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrument. In the third year in a desire to do Figurina painting. It is not owning the equipment, Helen took up a brush and palette. According to her, she becomes an artist did not intend to, and she had a painting for a hobby.
But by the mid-1970s, this hobby has grown into something more. Figurina approaches to a number of contemporary artists and become involved in the apartment exhibitions. It is representative of the "Chronicle", which was headed by Boris Koshelokhov. Far from the dogmas of socialist realism of the work of artists soon came under a ban: in 1978, an exhibition combining the House of Folk Art is closed. In those years, formed the picturesque style of Elena Figurina. And even then it seems obvious that the artist's work does not fit into the framework of naive art, which for her too straight and at the same time too passive and contemplative.
In 2000, the artist becomes a member of the Academy of Contemporary Art of the Immortals, organized and led by Felix Volosenkov. According to the organizers of the Academy recognized artists include innovators. Graphic Figurina manner, indeed, unique: on his canvases, she managed to create a new world with his characters, space, and a unique harmony of colors. In pictures Figurina usually no plot as such, binds the characters some internal emotion that the author manages to convey a surprisingly subtle, using a minimum of scenic resources.
Elena Figurina - one of the most important representatives of the Leningrad artistic underground. "I try to express in their work especially the status of all the familiar, bearing a message that is common to all. A man holding apples. Sunny day, warm smell of apples. All of this brings back childhood memories. This feeling is in every man. I donoshu it to the viewer through the interaction of form and color. "
