ULDUS (Uldus Bakhtiozina)
Born in 1986 in Leningrad (St.Petersburg).
Education: London Central Saint Martins College of Art (photography).

Uldus started her career in London as a reporter and photographer. Currently lives and works in St. Petersburg.

Her works are included in permanent collections of Ruya Foundation for Contemporary Culture in Iraq (RUYA), Fabergé Museum in Saint Petersburg and private collections in Russia and abroad.

In her photographs and video work, Uldus explores the subjects of self-identification, studies social roles, and their transformation in relation to the archetypes of the past and stereotypes of the present. Her visual language is characterized by fantasy and escapism, a “documentation of dreams”, as the artist herself would call it. While reflecting on Russian history and major events such as the Revolution, Uldus is being greatly inspired by Russian folklore and fairy tales.

Uldus is a member of the Royal Society of Arts (London), the first Russian speaker in the history of TED and a finalist of 11th Arte Laguna Art Prize.
Vogue Italy called Uldus The Best Young Fashion Photographer and in 2014 she was named one of the strongest women of 2014 according to BBC.

"Every shot I take is influenced by something, and each photo tells a story. I reference things that are special to me. Whether it is an old film, a song, a painting, or a poem. A few examples of references I’ve used are, the painting Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais, Bukowski 'A Smile To Remember' Poem, and Lukas Moodysson's film Lilya 4-ever. It’s all about telling a story. I am constantly inspired and my way of expressing this is by taking photos, it’s my way of sharing my experiences. There are way too many bland, cold, boring fashion and lifestyle photos out there. My photos try to express something deeper then today’s average trendy photo formula. I make it a point to get away from that. I want to be learning something or feeling something when I’m looking at a photo – so I try to create the same experience with my photography. With my art. With my Life!"
