Project by Anna Nova Gallery in Okhta Lab

Last week (August, 27) a new cultural and educational centre Okhta Lab opened its doors inside Okhta Mall. The mall is the first one in Russia to broaden the range of its activities to the extent of becoming a platform for learning and knowledge exchange.

As part of this project there are lectures from Science Slam and exhibition activity from Anna Nova Gallery. From August 27 until December 27 the second floor of the exhibition space is occupied with works of artists Rostan Tavasiev and Aljoscha. Both artists combine the two things you would not normally see mixed together: intellectual load and visual flamboyancy. They insist that art should be educating as well as entertaining. Aljoscha is famous for developing a new movement called “bioism” or “biofuturism”, his work is based on creating art that demonstrates visual possibilities of synthetic biology and bioethical abolitionism. Aljoscha believes that in the future artists will work with live creatures and create new forms of life just like scientists. Rostan Tavasiev creates his paintings and installations with stuffed toys. He calls his unique painting method “Hippainting” (i.e. painting with hippos). The toys display how defenceless and fearless at the same time a Russian artist is, they invite passive members of audience to empathise and to co-create.

The exhibition is on view at Okhta Mall, Yakornaya Street, 54.
