New Forestry Academy

GRAUND Solyanka x Anna Nova Gallery x Jessica Gallery, Moscow

On July 4, a joint exhibition by Fedor Hiroshige and Nestor Engelke, New Forestry Academy, realized with the support of Anna Nova Gallery and Jessica Gallery, will open in Moscow. It is a branch of the fictional educational institution of the same name, headed by Fyodor Hiroshige and Nestor Engelke, temporarily deployed in the walls of the GRAUND Solyanka workshop-gallery.

The artists opened an alternative academy named after themselves, ironizing the image of St. Petersburg as a center of academic art education. However, they do not teach drawing and composition, but magic and ritual practices, bringing academic seriousness to the point of absurdity.

Both authors have worked in the same workshop for many years. The experience of working side by side has led to the development of intertwined artistic methods: both Engelke and Hiroshige consistently explore the artistic possibilities of wood (creating large wood installations, sculptures, using the technique of pyrography and “axe painting”), both develop individual artistic mythology, in which modernity, where it is already difficult to draw the line between human and non-human, acquires a phantasmagoric character.
