Yandex.Books has implemented a large-scale project called “Station: Future”, inviting contemporary artists to create original covers for ten cult works by the Strugatsky brothers.
Alexandra Gart participated in the project and created the cover for the novel “Hard to Be a God”. The artist chose the perfect medium for this: contrasting woodcut.
"Alexandra Gart's woodcut depicts the world of Arkanar, a society without nuances, where violence is the only language. In this black-and-white thicket of birch trees, the horseman, Don Rumata, is lost — his bent figure bears the burden of the loneliness of a god bound by a duty of non-interference. Each contrast between black and white creates an oppressive atmosphere of a world in which it is difficult not only to be a god, but to remain human."
