I created the piece “The Charcoal Inside Me Still Has Sparks” after my surgery, since I wantedto document that moment. I wasn’t feeling well and was taking strong painkillers that dulledthe pain and made me feel happy. This feeling is similar to the state after surgery, when theanesthesia wears of: a person feels euphoric but remains in a state of duality. That’s why thismask simultaneously resembles a face during a happy dream and strange and tired esh.
The mask is lined with fabric from the hoodie I wore to my surgery, and on top it’s coated withwax containing a huge amount of glitter. If one shines a ashlight on it, it glows. At first, the mask seems strange and menacing, but once a beam of light is directed on it, it actuallybecomes luminous.
