Anna Nova Gallery presents Denis Patrakeev's project Above the Water, in which he reflects on his creative practice and questions the role of art and the artist. This is Patrakeev's first solo exhibition in the last six years. The gallery's halls will feature objects and installations made of natural materials and bronze, as well as video art.

The title of the project refers to the first chapter of the book of Genesis, describing the creation of the world. Above the Water is a place, where human being was created. In a similar way In the exhibition space, the artist's ideas find embodiment and take shape. “Any idea first originates in the mind, then manifests itself in a word. The word has a meaning, sound and graphic inscription,” Denis explains. In the same way, an object of art goes from concept to material realization.

Patrakeev works with stone, wood and metal. He applies natural material in its pristine form, translating it into the language of art from the language of creation. “In this way, the mysterious and sacred in nature is not taken out of the brackets of the material, but manifests itself in it,” says the artist.

In his practice, Denis strives to show the eternal through the temporal. The symbolic representation of this idea is bronze – an imperishable material, a kind of “antiques of the future”. Art in this context is a mediator between the spiritual and the material, that brings man closer to the sacred mystery of life through the act of creation.

“The artist creates images that interact with matter in the same way that the soul interacts with the body. Art becomes a great question, an exertion of the powers of the rational part of the soul, where the whole being of man seeks the Spirit. The Spirit that in the beginning was above the water,” is how Denis describes his approach. In the exhibition space, the viewer will be able to immerse into the world of poetry and philosophy of the artist.
