Peak of Uncertainty, Maria Dmitrieva, Elena Nemkova

Anna Nova Gallery presents the first joint exhibition by Maria Dmitrieva and Elena Nemkova — Peak of Uncertainty. The exhibition will feature works created specifically for this project, including sculpture, painting, installation, video art, and ceramic objects. Despite their differences in creative approach and visual language, the artists' works enter into a dialogue, forming a cohesive statement. Curated by art historian Dmitry Belkin, the exhibition will run from 20 June to 9 August 2026.

The focus of both artists' practices is on organic forms and the human body. Maria Dmitrieva creates biomorphic abstract paintings and graphics, as well as objects and video art. Drawing on autobiographical experiences, dream motifs, and the principle of spontaneity, she builds her own surreal world.  Elena Nemkova expresses her interest in the intersection of the organic and the technological by combining materials such as minerals and metals, and blending natural, anthropomorphic, and industrial imagery. The resulting hybrids become the protagonists of imagined narratives in which scientific and irrational knowledge are inextricably intertwined.

For this exhibition, the artists have transformed the gallery into a metaphorical space beyond familiar physical coordinates — Peak of Uncertainty. Maria and Elena’s works shape this anomalous landscape, preserving traces of the many attempts to navigate it. The navigation system, abandoned by an unknown protagonist, must be deciphered by viewers. Through visual and conceptual dialogue, the artists' works form a unified environment that gradually guides visitors from the beginning to the end of the exhibition.

The exhibition space simultaneously evokes both a protected natural area, where traces of the human are indistinguishable from the landscape, and a scene of a recent, inexplicable event, of which visitors are chance witnesses. This tension between the familiar and the unknown enables each visitor to develop their own narrative and discover their own unique interpretation of Peak of Uncertainty.
