Daria Buiun and Dmitry Stepanov. Defects: Daria Buiun, Dmitry Stepanov

20 March - 11 April 2009

The audiovisual installation by Daria Buiun and Dmitry Stepanov deals with how the mass media — radio, newspapers, newsreels and TV, influence public consciousness. Manipulations of collective reason and the unconscious always attract artists witha conceptually-critical orientation to expose censorship. Buiun and Stepanov in this respect make an interesting choice: they aren’t interested in political bans or disinformation , but the massive million strong matter of desire. The defects here are not infringements of information flows, but rather changes in “wishing machines”, which lead to the formation of mass psychoses, phobias, and seriously distorted ways of perceiving the world which, in turn, create new models of reality.
