In Imaginary Country: Artist Talk with Dima Filippov

October 10 | Anna Nova Gallery

On October 10 at 1 pm, Anna Nova Gallery will host an artist talk with Dima Filippov — the event is timed to coincide with the opening of his solo exhibition In Imaginary Country.

The artist will discuss how his practice explores the gaps between the real and the imagined, the centre and the periphery, personal memory and collective history. He will also talk about how he makes the hidden history of a place visible. Within the context of the exhibition, these ideas are explored through the use of light: by guiding the viewer’s gaze with optical devices, the artist seems to piece together an “imaginary” country from fragments — a space poised between the real landscape and the internal sense of place.

Particular attention will be paid to how a visual language emerges from places familiar to the artist. Broken lines, stylised vertical forms of ruins and rows of “suns” function as markers, bringing the landscape together into a coherent image. The discussion will also explore how an old photograph taken with a Soviet-era camera became the starting point for a series of new objects, capturing the moment when an ordinary place begins to speak in its own distinctive language.

The talk will take place in the Collectors’ Lounge on the gallery’s third floor.
