Scripture: Yuri Alexandrov

2 - 10 March 2012

Yuri Alexandrov tries to do the impossible: to turn the image into a word and the word into an image without the need for the tricks of calligraphy, Apollinaires calligrammes, Bruner’s Picto-poetry or Magritte’s ‘carriers of words’exhausted long ago." Alexandrov’s words do not depict what they say, they do duplicate themselves, turning into refined, curling lines and revealing themselves as an image, they do not "make up" for a kind of deliberate short fallin the image; they are not remotely ornamental as the Arabic Al-Hurufiyya or the signature of Abbot Paphnutius. Because they are just words carefully drawn out from long forgotten calligraphy lessons by the artist.
