Lost worlds. Restoration: Vladimir Kukuruza

19 February - 10 March 2010

Vladimir Kukuruza’s lens captures the most mysterious and striking spaces of St Petersburg – New Holland, The Kirov Stadium and the defunct but still standing ruins of the “Red Triangle” factory... Saving this disappearing world, Kukuruza discovers subjects and meanings wrought from our reality and fixes them to his photographs. One could say that he reconstructs this elusive beauty... His camera unfailingly captures the once magnificent architecture in a state of collapse... Or to be more precise he restores this almost lost world, while remaining truthful and honest. Objects of the past that fall within his camera’s gaze attain the quality of the absolute and hence become the property of the present. Modernity ceases to be perceived as a tragedy of constant loss; it is reformed into a grand picture of lived life which at the same time prompts recollections of the legend of Atlantis.
