Frieze Sculpture is an annual open‑air contemporary art exhibition held in London from September 16 to November 1, 2026.
The title of the work, Agony in the Garden, refers to a moment of spiritual crisis, but the piece transforms this reference into a physical rather than narrative form. Two paws are raised in a prayerful gesture; their shape evokes both an architectural arch and a familiar human expression of uncertainty. The crossed claws add a nuance of hesitation and protection.
The power of the sculpture lies in the tension generated during its creation. The forged metal, marked with scars and irregularities, carries an emotional charge, while the patina makes the surface responsive to light and atmospheric changes. The work becomes a dynamic element that harmoniously blends into its surroundings.
Situated in the heart of the city, this piece reinterprets the park as a place of refuge. It reflects on time as a collision of past and future, suggesting that even the smallest gesture can signal hope and resilience.
“The brutality of a primeval animal reaching toward space in an ultimate prayer has remained almost sarcastic: does this action serve any purpose? The metal, hand‑forged, carries fire, labour, and thousands of hammer blows. All this energy ultimately shaped the form,” says Elena.
