HYBRID 2024: Madrid, Spain

7 - 10 March 2024

The gallery will present a solo project by Anna Andrzhievskaia called ‘el flan rosa’  which is part of a large-scale series of artist’s exhibitions dedicated to the themes of migration, shelter and mimicry. The title refers to the Spanish phraseological phrase ‘estar como un flan’, which means to feel excitement.

Anna makes artistic interventions in public places that are not usually intended for displaying works of art — cafes, beauty parlors, stores, hotels, etc. All of them are ‘non-places’  —  spaces of temporary residence and social alienation.

One of these ‘non-places’ is the hotel where the HYBRID fair is traditionally held. The artist  creates a surrealist space in one of the hotel rooms, in which anthropomorphic dolls turn out to be the least living, sort of shells, while fountains, fruits and objects are endowed with living activity. The works of art in this case turn out to be both everyday objects, such as a nightlight or suitcases, which the artist creates especially for the project, and the  characters from her parallel reality who are watching a film about the past, created in an experimental genre where animation is mixed with digital video footage.

All situations and images of Anna's latest projects are united by the idea of the existence of a parallel reality, which materializes in our world through special portals. The artist creates images of non-human agents who mimic everyday objects, but they do not always do it successfully, which makes the works both tragic and comic at the same time.
